Faith on the Field
On the evening of September 6, Good Sam Youth Ministries took a group of more than 20 people (students and parents) to Eastern University to see the taping of the radio show “Faith on the Field.” Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Carson Wentz, and tight end, Trey Burton, were joined by surprise guests, Stefen Wisniewski and sports anchor, Howard Eskin to discuss what it is like to live as Christians in their context (professional sports).
The admissions office invited us to come early and get free pizza! They told us there would be a walking tour of the campus… but due to the weather, that tour was turned into a quick walk around campus (not-so-much a “tour”).
We were blessed to get seats very close to the front! We also got free ponchos. Why did we need ponchos? Well… the weather wasn’t great. It never completely poured but we were there in the rain and cold. But it was worth it!
All three football players had wonderful things to say. Their testimonies were powerful and we all found something that hit home to each of us. All three players emphasized the importance of having a faith community - but furthermore, that IN that community, we should have a “team” of people that help us to be far more than we could be on our own.
One of the things that stood out to us was that the players WERE NOT getting paid for this appearance. On top of that, their season opener was just a few days away! They were BUSY… but they felt it was so important to have the opportunity to share about their faith. That was a strong statement.
It was apparent that these men took their faith very seriously. They made it clear that following Christ is not a “part” of their lives… it IS their life.
That was pretty wonderful to hear.
Also wonderful… they won their game that Sunday verses the Redskins!
Go Eagles! And more importantly… Go Jesus!
