Gathering Hope ESL

Gathering Hope Serves Immigrants from 15 Different Countries

Gathering Hope describes their ministry as

a group of Malvern/Frazer neighbors from different countries whom God drew together to discover hope together through relationship building across ethnic, cultural, language and social boundaries within our local community. Our strategy is to live out our faith by creating spaces to safely gather, listen to each other, understand felt needs, and together resolve how best to address those needs. Our primary ministry work occurs through English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction.

Presently, Gathering Hope has sixty-four adult ESL students from thirteen countries and four continents now living in the greater Malvern/Paoli area. Over the years, Gathering Hope students have represented five different continents -from countries as diverse as Russia, Brazil, China, Libya and Ecuador. They offer four levels of ESL instruction at the Great Valley High School nighttime location and one level at the Church of the Good Samaritan during the day.Their mission is to extend the love of Christ by developing relationships that cross boundaries with neighbors from other countries to discover hope together. As such, the ministry’s orientation aligns with Good Samaritan’s, which is to share God’s love with our neighbors near and far.

Parishioner Meridith Ridington is Gathering Hope’s founder, director and a donor. Several others from Good Samaritan serve as mentors, teachers, translators, and donors. Gathering Hope teachers must demonstrate prior formal teaching experience, possess a valid PA certification and be Christians with an active faith and connection to a local church. Student fees and donations cover about 70% of the teacher’s salaries, and Good Samaritan support through the Missions Committee covers the remainder of salary needs. This year, we also approved additional funding to provide books for a new class.

Recently, Meridith sent a letter of Thanks for our continuing financial support, which includes updates on the work of Gathering Hope and their prayer requests. You can download it here.
