Roy & Cindy Wiese in the Czech Republic

Earlier this year, the Missions Committee was privileged to have Roy and Cindy Weise at a meeting to tell about their earlier mission work in the Czech Republic. On June 20, they are returning for a vacation to that mission field, and the committee was so moved by their story that they wanted to share the Wieses' story with the congregation and present the opportunity to pray for their trip.

Roy and Cindy have been attending Good Sam since moving to the area four years ago. From 2011-2013 they had been in full-time, self-supporting ministry in the Czech Republic, teaching English as a vehicle for outreach in partnership with a local Czech evangelical church. They were sponsored by their former home church, Reston Bible Church in northern Virginia, where they lived for about 30 years. Roy and Cindy met through missions in Nairobi, Kenya in 1975.

The Wieses' involvement in Czech ministry began with a summer English Camp run by a Czech church. They taught at this camp each summer from 2008 through 2012. After God called them to the Czech Republic for full-time ministry, they moved there in early 2011 and began teaching English classes and conversation groups primarily for adults. These interactions allowed nonbelievers to encounter Christians in a neutral, safe environment where relationships could be formed and opportunities might be created for faith to be shared.

Although they had planned to be in the field for many years, urgent family needs resulted in the Wieses' return to the US in early 2014. Since then they have continued to teach English to a few students via Skype, made two short visits in 2015, and maintained correspondence with numerous Czechs via email and occasional phone calls. They plan to visit the Czech Republic again for three-and-a-half weeks this summer to maintain and strengthen relationships there. They do not foresee resuming full-time ministry, but are praying for the opportunity to make more frequent visits.

Roy is a former college economics instructor and a retired foreign affairs specialist. His career included overseas assignments in South Africa and UK. Cindy is a former RN and later an admin specialist whose part-time positions included working at Prison Fellowship Ministries. They have three married children and eight grandchildren.

They recently shared that they are leaving June 20 for a vacation to the Czech Republic and hope it will be an opportunity to reconnect.

We are really looking forward to seeing our brothers and sisters in the Czech Republic as well as the students and friends to whom we have been reaching out. Of course we are excited that our two eldest grandchildren (Keely and Blake) will be able to join us on June 25 for ten days to share some of our experiences. We plan to return on July 14.

It would be so meaningful for us to know that people will be praying to support us as we travel and reconnect with those who have meant so much to us. In particular, we would appreciate prayers that:

  • We would be humbly attentive and obedient to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in our relationships with the Czechs, and that the joy of our salvation would be evident in us.
  • God would enable us in our limited time to meet with everyone He wants us to see and not overlook anyone.
  • Through the body of Christ in the Czech Republic, our grandchildren would develop a first-hand appreciation for God’s work in the world.

Thanks for prayers and God bless!
