Susan Starke has been the Parish Nurse at Good Sam since January 2007, the second of two parish nurses since 1999. After a career in nursing that included time in a hospital labor and delivery unit, Ob/Gyn office and intensive care nursery, Susan completed a graduate program at Boston College/Harvard Medical School, which prepared her to become a women’s health nurse practitioner. There followed many satisfying years caring for women, with some time off caring for her two children (Katie and Jason). Then came the pull to pursue a career in ministry. She spent a semester taking a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and a few more courses at Palmer Theological Seminary. During this time, she stumbled over the field of parish nursing. Here was a way to combine her two passions: nursing and pastoral care! It has been a grand journey ever since!
Susan makes her home in Berwyn, with her husband, Jeff, and her rascally dog, Rigsby. Her favorite activities are walking said adorable dog all over and everywhere, hiking, staring off at any body of water and gardening (which continually illustrates the fallenness of nature to her). She plays a mean game of tennis, if provoked.
